Can it be that I have not lived as one ought? Jan 04, Sumati rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Everyone who need to reform the ways to live a life Recommended to Sumati by: Maa Shelves: favoritesthought-provoking-mind-blowing The story of Ivan Ilyich was like wine — it goes down smoothly, but leaves a biting, succulent and lasting impression. He is said to be a decent man and yet, when his death by a mysterious illness comes horrifyingly close, his friends only think about what they can gain. He is unable to find his way to the road, however, and the horse eventually takes him back to the place where he left the peasant.

When young, Ivan was quite the fellow: smart, witty, good-humored. Among Russian writers, Leo Tolstoy is probably the best known to the Western world, largely because of War and Peace, his epic in prose, and Anna Karenina, one of the most splendid novels in any language. A Prisoner in the Caucasus His previous work includes translations of Mandelstam, Dragomoshchenko, and Catullus. Pozdnyshev, whose description of his sexual and marital history takes up the bulk of the narrative, claims that all sex as practiced in his time oppresses women. Here the light shown fully upon me, and I became what I am.

Readers who knew nothing about his fiction turned to him for his views on social, religious and political topics. But more than anything, I would offer, it is about the consequences of living without meaning, that is, without a true and abiding connection to one's life Spoiler alert: nothing. He no longer hates his daughter or wife, but rather feels pity for them, and hopes his death will release them.

Given our knowledge of the life and values of the Russian bourgeoisie as related in Chapter I, the metaphor Tolstoy employs to describe Ivan's relationship to his social superiors—that of a fly being drawn to a bright light—is especially fitting.

Pozdnyshev, whose description of his sexual and marital history takes up the bulk of the narrative, claims that all sex as practiced in his time oppresses women. During the long and painful process of dying, Ivan dwells on the idea that he does not deserve his suffering because he has lived rightly.

The moralistic side of the story originally struck me as its greatest weakness. Ivan becomes adept at establishing barriers and closing himself off from the unseemly and indecorous aspects of life. The master then lies on top of the peasant to keep him warm through the cold night.

His conduct and worldview are wholly determined by the opinions and expectations of the elite class.
